Once Usage monitoring has been set up, you need to start it in order to collect monitoring data. You can also stop it at any time. After monitoring has been running for a few minutes and data has been collected, you can view it in a variety of ways. If you set up Usage monitoring alerts, condition violation and clear events can also be viewed.

Start Usage monitoring

Before you start Usage monitoring on a monitoring point, it must be set up properly.

To start Usage monitoring:

  1. Navigate to Usage > Monitoring Points.
  2. For the monitoring point interface you want to start monitoring on, click the icon.
    • It takes at least five minutes for the first results to be seen on this page.
    • Results are sent back to APM every five minutes and are displayed in a variety of charts.
    • If you are not seeing the results you expect, try troubleshooting the issue.

Stop Usage monitoring

Once Usage monitoring is started, it can be stopped.

To stop monitoring:

  1. Navigate to Usage > Monitoring Points.
  2. For the monitoring point interface you want to stop monitoring on, click the icon.
    • Monitoring is stopped.

View Usage monitoring results

Usage monitoring results can be viewed in a number of ways, including:

  • Application Usage Summary page - provides an overview of traffic (by application) across selected monitoring points for the selected timeframe (up to one day).
  • 24 Hour charts - provides a view of a selected traffic parameter (for example, Traffic Volume) for each monitoring point.
  • Application Usage Monitoring Point Details charts - provides a variety of highly customizable and detailed charts showing results from a selected monitoring point Usage monitoring interface.
  • Saved Views - provides a way to save a view of a Application Usage Monitoring Point Details chart so that it doesn’t have to be reconfigured each time you want to run it.

Application Usage Summary page

The Application Usage Summary page provides an overview of traffic (by application) across selected monitoring points for a selected timeframe (up to one day).

To view the Application Usage Summary page:

  1. Navigate to Usage > Summary.
    • The page is displayed.
      • The Traffic Summary pane provides a summary of various traffic parameters for the selected monitoring points over the selected period.
      • The Top Applications pane provides a graphic of the relative traffic volume for the top applications against selected monitoring points.

Actions on this page include:

  • To adjust the time period to display:
    • In the top pane, select a zoom link, use the calendar, or use the slider.
  • To select the monitoring points to display:
    • In the Traffic Summary pane, click the Locations link.
  • To filter what is being displayed in the Top Applications pane:
    • In the Top Applications pane, adjust the filter fields in the top right of the pane.
  • To view application traffic details:
    • In the Top Applications pane, hover over the application name or click it for additional detail.
  • To view detailed charts for a monitoring point:
    • In the Top Applications pane, click the monitoring point name/port.

24 Hour charts

The 24 Hour charts provide a view of a selected traffic parameter (for example, Traffic Volume) for each monitoring point.

To view the 24 Hour charts:

  1. Navigate to Usage > Monitoring Points.
    • There is a 24 Hour chart displayed for each monitoring point/interface.

Actions on the charts include:

  • To change the traffic parameter the charts display:
    • In the 24 Hour column heading, select the traffic parameter to display in the charts.

Application Usage Monitoring Point Details charts

The Application Usage Monitoring Point Details charts provide a variety of highly customizable and detailed charts showing results from a selected monitoring point Usage monitoring interface. See Usage Chart Data to understand some of the concepts and calculations that may not be obvious in the charts.

To view the Application Usage Monitoring Point Details charts:

  1. Navigate to Usage > Monitoring Points.
  2. Click the name of the monitoring point you are interested in.
    • The Application Usage Monitoring Point Details page is displayed.
      • The top pane allows you select from a number of charts. Selecting a chart will open a new tab.
      • The Traffic Summary pane provides a summary of various traffic parameters for the selected monitoring points over the selected period.
      • The chart pane displays one of the selected charts:
        • Top Applications - displays the applications generating the most traffic.
        • Top Categories - displays application category generating the most traffic.
        • Top QoS - displays the QoS values seen most frequently.
        • Top Sources - displays the hosts sending the most traffic.
        • Top Destinations - displays the hosts receiving the most traffic.
        • Top Hosts - displays the hosts sending and receiving the most traffic.

Actions on the charts include:

  • To open a detail chart (containing a chart and a details table) in a new tab:
    • In the top pane, click one of the chart links.
  • To drill down on a chart:
    • Hover over the chart and click a blue pip for the detail you are interested in.
  • To select a new chart:
    • In the chart pane, click the chart title and select a new chart from the dropdown.
  • To select a different traffic parameter to display:
    • In the chart pane, click View Options (top right) and select the traffic parameter in the dropdown.
  • To show both inbound and outbound traffic:
    • In the chart pane, click View Options (top right) and select Show as Inbound / Outbound Traffic.
  • To select a different monitoring point/interface:
    • In the Monitoring Point pane (top right), select a monitoring point/interface from the dropdown.
  • To select a different time range:
    • In the Filter Options pane (center right), specify the time range and click Apply Filter.
  • To select a recent filter:
    • In the 10 Recent Filter(s) pane (bottom right), click the recent filter you want to see. A new tab is opened.
  • To view details for a particular host:
    • In the Top Sources, Top Destinations, or Top Hosts tables, click the host you are interested in. A page containing details for the selected host is opened.
  • To save a view of the page (more than one tab must be open):
  • To share a link to the page via email:
    • Select > Share Link and fill in the email details.
  • To download a PDF containing one or more Application Usage Monitoring Point Details reports:
  • To schedule generation and delivery of a PDF containing one or more Application Usage Monitoring Point Details reports:

Saved views

Saved views provide a way to save a view of an Application Usage Monitoring Point Details chart so that it doesn’t have to be reconfigured each time you want to run it.

Actions include:

Create a saved view

To create a saved view:

  1. Navigate to Usage > Monitoring Points.
  2. Click the name of the monitoring point you are interested in.
    • The Application Usage Monitoring Point Details page is displayed.
  3. In a new tab, create and configure the chart you want saved.
  4. Click > Save Current View and enter the view details.
  5. Click Save.
    • The view is saved.

View a list of saved views

To list the views you’ve saved:

  1. Navigate to Usage > Saved Views.
    • The saved views are listed.

Execute a saved view

To execute a saved view:

  1. Navigate to Usage > Saved Views.
  2. Click the saved view you want to execute.

Delete a saved view

To delete a saved view:

  1. Navigate to Usage > Saved Views.
  2. Click Bulk Action.
  3. Select the saved view(s) you want to delete.
  4. In the Bulk Action dropdown, select Delete.
  5. Click OK.
    • The selected saved views are deleted.

View Usage monitoring events

If Usage monitoring is running and an alert profile is applied to a monitoring point, every condition violation and clear event is indicated on Usage monitoring charts and in the Usage monitoring events log.

View event indicators on charts

To view event indicators on charts:

  1. Navigate to Usage > Monitoring Points.
  2. Click the name of the monitoring point you are interested in.
    • The Application Usage Monitoring Point Details page is displayed.
    • All violation and clear events are indicated on the time axis of charts on this page.
    • Hover over the event indicator to see the event text.

Event indicators include:

Icon Status Description
Violated Indicates a violation event.
Cleared Indicates a cleared violation event.

View event log

To view the Usage monitoring event log:

  1. Navigate to Usage > Events.
    • The Usage monitoring events are shown.

Actions on this page include:

  • To select monitoring points:
    • In the Monitoring Point dropdown (top left), select the monitoring points to display.
  • To specify the time range:
    • In the From and To fields (top center), select the start and end of the time range.
  • To select the sort order:
    • In the Sort by dropdown (top right), select the sort order.

Usage monitoring event status is indicated by the following icons:

Icon Status Description
violated.svg Violated Indicates a violation event.
ok.svg Cleared Indicates a cleared violation event.
unknown.svg Indeterminate Indicates the status is indeterminate. This is expected for a short time after a new alert profile is applied to a monitoring point interface.
